15+ Years Experience

Lost a filling or crown and now experiencing sharp, shooting pain with every bite or sip? Your tooth's inner nerve is now exposed to air, food, and bacteria. This isn't something you can ignore. Within 48 hours, decay accelerates and infection risk skyrockets.

While this might not always cause immediate agony, a lost restoration leaves the sensitive inner layers of your tooth (dentine) exposed to the oral environment. This can lead to sharp sensitivity, food packing, and rapid decay if not addressed quickly. At Emergency Dentist London, we can often repair or replace the restoration in a single visit, protecting your tooth from further damage.

Immediate Steps: What to Do

DO NOT SWALLOW IT!

Remove it: Take the crown or filling out of your mouth to prevent inhaling it.

Keep it

If it's a crown (gold or porcelain), clean it and bring it with you. We might be able to re-cement it. (Old amalgam fillings usually cannot be reused).

Keep it clean

Gently brush the area and rinse with warm water.

Temporary Fix

You can buy "temporary dental cement" (e.g., Toofypegs) from a pharmacy to plug the hole or stick the crown back on temporarily.

Sugar-Free Gum

In a pinch, a piece of sugar-free gum placed over the hole can protect the tongue from sharp edges.

WARNING: NO SUPERGLUE

NEVER try to glue a crown or filling back in with Superglue or household adhesives. These are toxic and will kill the nerve of the tooth, turning a cheap repair into an expensive root canal. They also make it impossible for us to remove the crown properly later.

Why Did It Fall Out?

Restorations don't last forever. Common reasons for failure include:

Recurrent Decay

Bacteria can leak under the edges of an old filling, causing the tooth structure underneath to rot and soften until the filling simply falls out.

Cement Failure

The glue holding a crown can wash out over 10-15 years.

Trauma/Grinding

Excessive force from clenching or biting hard objects can snap the bond.

Treatment Options

1. Re-Cementation (Crowns)

If your crown fits perfectly and the tooth underneath is healthy (no decay), we can simply clean it and cement it back on. This is the quickest and cheapest solution.

2. Replacement Filling

If a filling is lost, we clean the cavity to remove any fresh decay and place a new, durable composite (white) filling. We shape it to match your bite perfectly.

3. Core Build-Up and New Crown

If the tooth structure underneath has crumbled or decayed, the old crown will no longer fit. We will need to build up the core of the tooth with filling material and take impressions for a brand new, custom-made crown.

Don't leave a gap! Exposed teeth can drift, over-erupt, or decay rapidly. Book an emergency slot today to restore your smile.
