How emergency dental care works for visitors

A clear, three-step pathway from phone call to treatment. You — or your hotel concierge — can start the process in a few minutes.

1

Phone or online booking

Call 020 3137 6356 yourself, ask your hotel reception to call on your behalf, or book online. We triage your symptoms over the phone and confirm a same-day or next-available slot.

2

Clinical assessment

A GDC-registered dentist takes a brief medical history, examines the affected area and takes an X-ray if clinically indicated. Findings, options and costs are discussed before any treatment begins.

3

Treatment & documentation

Where clinically appropriate, definitive or stabilising treatment is carried out at the same visit. You receive a treatment statement and proof of payment, including the clinician's GDC number, which you can submit to your own travel-insurance provider.

Common dental emergencies we treat for visitors

The clinical presentations we most often see in patients who are not normally based in the UK. All assessments are carried out by a GDC-registered dentist.

Severe toothache

Pulpal pain, pressure pain, lingering sensitivity to hot or cold — examination, X-ray where indicated, and immediate management with pulp extirpation, medicated dressing or definitive treatment as appropriate.

Learn more

Knocked-out or displaced tooth

Avulsed and luxated teeth treated as a time-critical injury. Repositioning, splinting and pulp assessment by a GDC-registered clinician.

Learn more

Lost crown, inlay or filling

Re-cementation where the existing restoration is intact, or a temporary restoration to seal the tooth and prevent fracture until you return home.

Learn more

Broken or fractured tooth

Sharp edges smoothed, exposed dentine sealed, and a same-day composite or temporary restoration placed where clinically indicated.

Learn more

Dental abscess and facial swelling

Drainage where accessible, antibiotic management when clinically appropriate, and clear escalation advice if there are signs of spreading infection.

Learn more

Wisdom tooth pain (pericoronitis)

Irrigation of the operculum, oral hygiene advice, and assessment of whether the tooth requires extraction or referral.

Learn more

Broken denture or damaged orthodontic appliance

Same-day denture repair where possible, and management of protruding orthodontic wires or detached brackets.

Learn more

Post-operative complications

Dry socket, post-extraction bleeding, suture review and assessment of healing after recent dental surgery — whether the original treatment was carried out in the UK or abroad.

Complications after dental treatment abroad

A recurring presentation in our clinics: patients who travelled overseas for dental work and developed a problem on returning to, or visiting, the UK.

The clinical concerns we see most frequently include crowns or bridges that have de-cemented, post-extraction infection or dry socket, persistent sensitivity following veneer or composite work, ill-fitting prostheses, and post-surgical bleeding or swelling.

Our role in these cases is focused and clinical. We carry out an examination, take any radiographs that are clinically indicated, and address the immediate issue — pain, infection, sharp edges, mobility, or seal of the affected tooth. Where the underlying treatment plan needs to be revisited, we provide a written clinical summary you can take back to your original treating dentist. We do not provide medico-legal opinions or reports for disputes with overseas providers.

For more on the cost and structure of follow-up care, see our pages on transparent pricing and private emergency care.

Treatment statement & proof of payment

Documentation you can submit to your own travel-insurance provider.

We do not accept, process or bill any insurance company directly. Payment is taken at the clinic at the time of treatment. After your appointment we provide a written treatment statement and proof of payment which you can submit to your insurer as part of your own claim. The statement includes:

  • Patient name and date of treatment
  • Treating clinician's name and GDC registration number
  • Treatment description with standard procedure codes where applicable
  • Itemised fees in pounds sterling
  • Practice name, address and contact details
  • Receipt confirming payment in full

This is the type of documentation most travel-insurance providers request when assessing a claim. If your insurer has supplied a specific claim form, bring it to the appointment and we will complete the clinical sections at the end of your visit.

We are not affiliated with, or an approved provider for, any travel-insurance company. Whether your claim is accepted, the amount reimbursed, any policy excess and eligibility are entirely matters between you and your insurer.

Bookings via your hotel

Many of our visiting patients are booked through hotel concierge or guest services. If you would prefer not to make the call yourself, ask reception to contact us on 020 3137 6356. We will triage the issue, confirm a suitable appointment time, and send the appointment details back to the hotel so they can be passed to you. Please bring photo ID and a payment card to the appointment.

Frequently asked questions for visitors

Clinical, practical and administrative questions we are most often asked by tourists and short-stay patients.

Can a tourist get emergency dental treatment in London without an NHS number?+

Yes. As a private dental practice we do not require an NHS number, GP registration, or proof of UK residency. We treat visitors and short-stay patients in the same way as any private patient: a brief medical history is taken at registration, a clinical assessment is carried out by a GDC-registered dentist, and any treatment is discussed and quoted before it begins.

Will my travel insurance cover the cost of emergency dental treatment?+

That is a matter between you and your insurer. We are a private dental practice and do not accept, process or bill any insurance company directly. Payment is taken at the clinic at the time of treatment. After your appointment we provide a treatment statement and proof of payment — including the treating clinician’s GDC registration number, treatment description, fees in pounds sterling and practice details — which you can submit to your travel-insurance provider as part of your own claim. We are not affiliated with or an approved provider for any travel-insurance company.

Can my hotel concierge book the appointment for me?+

Yes. Many of our visiting patients are booked through hotel concierge or guest services. Ask reception to call 020 3137 6356 on your behalf — we will triage the issue, confirm a same-day or next-available slot, and send appointment details directly to the hotel. You only need to bring photo ID and a payment card.

I had dental work done abroad and it has failed — can you help?+

Yes. Failed work after treatment overseas (crowns coming loose, post-extraction infection, sensitivity following recent veneers, ill-fitting prostheses) is a common reason visitors contact us. We carry out a focused clinical assessment, address the immediate problem — pain, infection, mobility or sharp edges — and provide a written summary you can take back to your original treating dentist. We do not provide opinions or reports for legal disputes.

What payment methods do you accept?+

Major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express), Apple Pay, Google Pay and contactless. Payment is taken at the clinic at the time of treatment. We do not accept, process or bill insurance companies directly.

Do you speak languages other than English?+

Our clinical team and reception staff speak English fluently. Additional languages are available depending on which clinician you see — please mention any language preference when booking and we will let you know who is available that day.

How quickly can a visitor be seen?+

For genuine dental emergencies — severe pain, swelling, trauma, bleeding, lost restorations — we aim to offer a same-day appointment. The exact slot depends on availability at the time of your call. If you are unsure whether your problem is urgent, call 020 3137 6356 and our team will triage symptoms over the phone.

I am only in London for a short trip — will treatment be completed in one visit?+

Where clinically appropriate, yes. Many emergency presentations — pain relief, temporary restorations, re-cementing a crown, dressing an infected tooth, suturing a soft-tissue laceration — can be resolved in a single appointment. More complex treatment (root canal therapy, definitive crown work) may require a second visit or be planned as a temporary stabilisation so you can be seen by your usual dentist on return.
