It is a surprisingly common scenario: you are eating dinner, you feel a hard lump in your mouth, but before you can retrieve it, you gulp. You realize your dental crown is gone. Panic sets in. Have you harmed yourself? Will you get it back?
Step 1: Are You Breathing Okay?
The most critical question is: did you swallow it (stomach) or inhale it (lungs)?
If you swallowed it, you will likely feel fine. If you inhaled it (aspiration), you will likely be coughing violently, wheezing, or having trouble breathing. Aspiration is a medical emergency. Go to A&E immediately for a chest X-ray and bronchoscopy.

Step 2: The Waiting Game
If you swallowed it into your stomach, the crown will pass through your digestive system naturally. Dental porcelain and gold are non-toxic and inert. It typically takes 2-5 days to pass. While not the most glamorous task, some patients choose to retrieve it from their stool, bleach it, and bring it in to be sterilized and re-cemented (saving the cost of a new one!). However, most prefer to have a new one made.
Step 3: Protect the Tooth
The tooth underneath the lost crown is now a "stump" that is exposed to the oral environment. It may be sensitive to cold and prone to drifting. You need to see a dentist promptly.
We will:
- Clean the tooth.
- Place a temporary crown to protect it and maintain the gum space.
- Scan/impress for a new permanent crown.
