The cost of wisdom tooth removal depends on how the tooth is positioned and whether a straightforward or surgical approach is needed. At Emergency Dentist London, we publish our extraction fees so you can understand the likely cost before your visit.
A simple wisdom tooth extraction starts from £125 at our membership rate, or from £250 at our standard rate. Surgical extractions for impacted wisdom teeth start from £325 (member) or £650 (standard).
A full treatment plan with an itemised cost breakdown is provided after your initial assessment, so you can make an informed decision about costs before treatment begins.
* Member prices apply to our dental membership plan members who receive 50% off standard fees. Prices shown start “from” the amounts listed and may vary based on clinical complexity. A detailed treatment plan is provided after your examination.
Wisdom tooth assessment and extraction may involve additional procedures. Below are fees for commonly associated services.
Our extraction fee covers the clinical procedure itself. Here is a breakdown of what is and is not included, so you have a clear understanding of what is covered.
Several factors influence the final fee for wisdom tooth extraction. Your dentist will explain these during your consultation so you understand the cost before treatment begins.
A fully erupted wisdom tooth that is visible above the gum line is typically simpler to remove. A partially erupted or fully impacted tooth buried in bone requires a surgical approach and costs more.
Wisdom teeth can be angled towards the adjacent tooth (mesioangular), tilted backwards (distoangular), lying sideways (horizontal) or straight (vertical). Horizontally impacted teeth are often the most complex to remove.
Lower wisdom teeth sit close to the inferior alveolar nerve. If X-rays suggest a close relationship, additional imaging (such as a CBCT scan) may be recommended, and the extraction may require extra care.
If multiple wisdom teeth need removal in the same appointment, the overall fee will reflect the complexity of each individual extraction. Your dentist will provide a combined treatment plan.
Our dental membership plan offers 50% off the standard fee for wisdom tooth extraction and all other treatments listed in our fee guide. For example, a surgical extraction at the standard rate starts from £650. With membership, the same procedure starts from £325.

Wisdom teeth (third molars) usually emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. When there is not enough space in the jaw for them to erupt fully, they can become impacted — meaning they are partially or completely trapped beneath the gum and bone. The type of impaction affects the complexity and cost of removal.
The tooth is in a normal upright position but has not fully broken through the gum. This is often the simplest type of impacted wisdom tooth to remove.
The tooth is angled forward, towards the front of the mouth and pressing against the second molar. This is the most common type of impaction.
The tooth is angled backwards, towards the back of the jaw. This can sometimes make access more difficult during extraction.
The tooth is lying completely on its side, pushing into the root of the adjacent molar. This typically requires a surgical approach and is often the most complex to remove.
Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed. Extraction may be recommended in certain clinical situations. Your dentist will assess your specific case using X-rays and a clinical examination before advising whether removal is appropriate. Common reasons include:
NICE guidance: The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends that wisdom teeth should not be removed prophylactically (preventatively). Extraction is recommended only when there is evidence of pathology — such as infection, decay, cysts, or damage to adjacent teeth. Your dentist will follow this guidance when advising you.
Recovery time varies between individuals and depends on the complexity of the extraction. Below is general guidance — your dentist will provide specific post-operative instructions tailored to your case.
Most patients can return to normal activities within 1–2 days. Some swelling and mild discomfort is typical for the first 24–48 hours.
Recovery may take 5–7 days. Swelling typically peaks at 48–72 hours and then gradually improves. Stitches may dissolve on their own or be removed at a follow-up visit.
Over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol can help manage discomfort, if suitable for you. Always follow the dosage instructions and consult a pharmacist, dentist or GP if unsure.
For the first 24 hours, avoid smoking, alcohol, hot drinks, vigorous rinsing and strenuous exercise. These can disturb the blood clot and delay healing.
